It's your turn. The Announcer just called your name. The crowd is ready. And the TV shows a grey box: "Video unavailable. This video is not available in your country."
If you've hosted karaoke in Mexico, Brazil, or a dozen other places, you know this box. This post explains why it happens, what Loopsing does about it now, and what to do when it still shows up.
Why a karaoke video plays in one country and not another
Karaoke videos on YouTube are uploaded by karaoke channels, but the song underneath belongs to publishers and rights societies. Those organisations can tell YouTube where a recording may play. A regional society — LatinAutor is the one that hits Spanish-language catalogs hardest — can block a video across Latin America while the exact same upload plays fine in Texas or Madrid.
Two things make this maddening for a karaoke app:
- The block is invisible from a server. YouTube only decides at playback time, based on where the viewer is. Loopsing can't ask "will this play in Monterrey?" from a data centre — only a real browser in Monterrey knows.
- Blocks cluster. When one video from a publisher is blocked in a country, the next twenty from the same catalog usually are too. A room could hit the same wall song after song.
Until this month, Loopsing tracked playability as a single yes/no per video. There was nowhere to write down "fine in the US, blocked in MX", so Mexican rooms kept rediscovering the same dead videos, one turn at a time.
What changed: Loopsing learns *where* a video refuses to play
Playability is now recorded per country:
- When a video fails on a real host screen or in a singer's preview, that browser reports the failure. Loopsing stamps it with the country the request came from — never something the browser can claim about itself — and stores it as a block for that country only.
- The first report is remembered for a week. If it happens again, a month. Blocks that stop happening quietly expire.
- Search, suggestions and the popular list are filtered by your country before you see them. A video known to be blocked where you are simply doesn't show up. Rooms in other countries are unaffected — a Mexican block never removes a song from a room in Spain.
- Adding a song to the queue checks the same list, so a known-blocked video can't be queued by accident.
The list keeps improving as more parties happen: every room that hits a block makes the next room in that country a little smoother.
Pro tip: If a video does die on the host screen, Loopsing parks the song rather than burning your turn. Pick another version — there's usually one from a different channel that plays fine.
Search got better at finding that other version
Region blocks were only half the problem. The other half was search itself.
- It reads your query now. Search used to rank on channel reputation and view counts and never looked at the words you typed — "one punch man intro" returned "Stay With Me". Titles matching your words now rank first, and a half-typed word still counts.
- It fills toward ten results. Niche song with two karaoke versions? Search now adds backing tracks and lyric videos after the real karaoke hits, never mixed in — so a blocked version isn't the end of the road.
- Channels that refuse to embed are gone. A few big karaoke channels turned off embedding, which made every one of their videos a grey box in every country. They no longer appear in results.
- Rising channels get a chance. Newer channels with clean lyrics and good timing rank above generic uploads, below the proven ones.
What you can do tonight
- Host from the country you're in. The filter uses the location of the device doing the search, so a VPN pointed elsewhere will hide the wrong blocks.
- Search by song, not by channel. Let the ranking pick a version that plays.
- If it still fails, tell us the video. Write to [email protected] with the room code and the song — a failure that reaches us becomes a block that protects the next room.
